hi, just bought a hummer EV and my supercruise works very intermittently. not sure if this is a car issue or GMC issue.

Are you in an area with bad cell reception for AT&T? If not then there may be a few updates for the Super Cruise module you may want to go to the dealer and make sure they update all the modules in the vehicle to the most recent: The TSB you want to reference is 24-NA-143.

There are usually two reasons Supercruise isn't working:

1) If it says something like "No Road info" that means it's on, initialized, and functioning but either the road you're on isn't mapped or the data connection sucks so bad it can't download it.

2) If it says "Supercruise Unavailable" that means that the system didn't initialize when you started the truck. i.e. it couldn't verify some part of the system was active, couldn't confirm you have an active subscription, etc. Here's the part that's so stupid I can't believe it made it to production...it doesn't reattempt to initialize until the truck is off and sits for some amount of time. It doesn't recheck every 30-60 seconds until it works...it basically throws up its hands and gives up until a power cycle. That means, if you're just setting off on a 3+ hour stint...you just don't have Supercruise until you pull over, turn off the truck, wait a couple minutes, then restart it (preferably in an area where it has a data connection). Out of everything involved with the truck that is the most mind-boggling thing. Why the hell doesn't it keep trying to get the system functioning. It's the vehicular equivalent of the worst employee ever. Like if they mistyped their password or keyed a door code in wrong and just went home. If the service sheet from my battery swap is correct and they DID update the Supercruise module it didn't do anything, which means I'm probably due a Supercruise module and wonder if the limited recall they did on the module shouldn't be expanded.

There is also a potential of needing updates on your modules. When I got my Hummer in January, supercruise worked perfectly. Went into the dealer about a month later to fix a rear door issue that ended up needing a module update...this caused me to go through a full round of updates to all the vehicles modules (I believe about 37 modules in total). After the updates supercruise would either refuse to engage, or when it did engage it would only stay on for about 10-30 secs and then trigger off with a "No Road Information Available" message. It seemed like the vehicle was unable to confirm its gps location, preventing supercruise from engaging due to needing confirmation of location on pre-mapped roads. Took my hummer back in, i believe the tech either reflashed some modules or updated again, and now my supercuise has been perfect for 5 months. I am in California Bay Area, and have no issues with cell reception in the areas I drive. Hummer EV SUV ED1.

Module updates are not quick if you go to the dealer. Expect to not get the vehicle back for at least 24hrs.

I get this all the time! I live in Nashville and just took mine on a 4,000 mile trip to the northeast. It rarely works in Nashville and it worked maybe 10-20% of my drive to the northeast, which was I40, I81, I78, I95. I drove through every major city up the east coast and it failed to work. My dealer informed me at the beginning of July, there was a new SB out and that GM Engineering was working on a fix for SuperCruise. I also looked at a Cadillac in June and they informed me that they had a stop sale on some Cadillacs due to issues with SuperCruise.

Knock on wood, I just had them do the tonneau cover recall and they said they found and ran two “programs” and my Supercruise has worked 100% of the time since. It still drops for a few seconds due to lack of map data occasionally as I’m passing through cell dead zones without my hotspot, but it almost immediately comes back once data is restored. Will report if anything changes.

Suprecruise has remained a big problem on my Edition 1 SUV since purchasing in January. Been to dealer repeatedly and diagnosed over & over with TAC in Detroit. Modules reprogrammed, updated, until finally replacing the mapping module..twice..and both times the replacement modules were ensured to have correct parameters set before sending to my dealer. My dealer tech is fantastic, last couple times my “Service Driver Assist” warning light comes on(means Supercruise is disabled amongst other things) he has me bring it immediately to him at dealer with no appointment, to try to further diagnosis the code and resolve. My dealer tech has been told by TAC at GM that it is a software anomaly that will be fixed with OTA’s..genius level stuff there..of course the over-the-air updates have been “coming soon” all year long and it’s nearly Sept. Fun to drive & the vehicle has great aesthetics..but one has to many technology gremlins that either don’t work or inconsistently malfunction..some things as basic as the phone charger-rest up in center console.

I’ve had mine brought into the dealer three times to fix the super cruise issue. Each time I bring it in they tell me there’s a new software update that will fix it but I still run into the same issues on maps roads.

For instance, driving up I 70 from Denver to Frisco all of I 70 is labeled as super cruise enabled and mapped. It also shows us on the map in the truck itself. But then I’ll get the random no road information and a disconnect. It happens about 3 to 4 times traveling in each direction. This is the part that confuses me about super cruise because I didn’t think it was dependent on having cell phone signal the entire time. I thought once the modules were updated then it just worked regardless of your cell phone coverage.

Yesterday I got the super cruise unavailable message. I ended up pulling over in a parking lot, since my wife had to go to the restroom anyways, and doing a full reboot on the truck via power cycling the truck with a five minute off period and then a reboot of the entertainment system. Super cruise then worked again. The truck was just in to fix this issue in late July. I figured I’ll deal with what I have until a real fix comes out.

When it does work though, it is one of the most fantastic features! Navigating the roads of I 70 through the mountains with traffic has to be the ultimate test. It does an amazing job! I never thought I would enjoy a vehicle driving me down the road at highway speeds while I just monitor it. It’s super fantastic.

Supercruise is impacted/directed by the mapping module, when/if the mapping module is malfunctioning you typically get the “Service Driver Assist System” warning notification in the dash/instrument panel, which disables SuperCruise amongst other things. Since purchasing my Hummer SUV Edition 1 back in January, I have continued to get the Service Driver Assist warning and SuperCruise has malfunctioned for 8 months & counting. I have taken the vehicle to my dealer tech repeatedly, undergone countless module re-programming, updates..until finally the mapping module was replaced..twice..and both times GM-TAC in Detroit ensured the new mapping modules had the parameters properly set before shipping. The malfunction remains to this day..and GM-TAC in Detroit’s resolve?..”it’s a known software anomaly that will be fixed soon with upcoming OTA’s. It’ now September, what OTA’s??!! My dealer technician is fantastic and only services Hummer EV’s, he’s well known and consulted on by other Hummer technicians for help nationwide. In the last month he instructed me to bring my Hummer in immediately whenever I receive the Service Driver Assist warning, so he can try to diagnosis real-time for resolve..but the same steps get repeated via GM-TAC. I’m not going through Lemon Law protocol. I’ve posted this story several times to offer factual insight to others..and maybe, just maybe..that the Moderator here would assist me somehow, direct me to higher management in GM for attention, etc..something besides instructing me to make sure my dealer technician did the required firmware update before/after installing the new mapping modules.

You can reach out to mary.barra@gm.com and politely explain your situation.

You will also get that error message if the sensors/cameras are dirty, misaligned, or not properly connected. It isn't just the module.

If the module was replaced you also need to go through a calibration process on each of the cameras. It isn't just plug and play on replacement.

I think you are right that there is a a process/commissioning after updates that some of the Hummer Techs are missing. My assumption is the written direction for the techs is missing items related to a required step by step process, or a final calibration moment that there are not doing. If I remember right (mine was done about 5 months ago) my tech went on an internal chat with other Hummer techs who had tips on what was needed beyond just grabbing the newest update, seemed like he was just going through like an initial setup/calibration process but it might also have just been a specific order that things need to be done in. Whatever my tech saw, it worked because it has been great in my hummer for a long time now.

SuperCruise is a SUPER disappointment. This option rarely works and when it does, it usually is not for long. I don't think i have ever made it more than 15 miles on the interstate without being informed that roadmaps are unavailable. Most times it will go a few miles, give me the warning and i can usually re-engage and it will work for a few more miles. Sometimes on a return trip, it works in the exact locations that it had not worked earlier in the day. I had it in for service yesterday and they said it works as expected, that if the maps are not available then that is not the problem of SuperCruise. WOW!
I have only owned this thing since May and I have quickly realized why i had left GM years ago.

Mine works very well 95% of of the time. Every month or two I have a 2-3 day spell where is is really bad, engages for 10-20 secs then kicks out. Always goes away eventually. I have a 2023 ED1 Truck, maybe it’s an issue with the newer ones. I have noticed more two lane roads being added every month. Just on a State Road last week that has been added recently. Bummer its not working well for you.

SuperCruise is not reliable and problematic..that is a fact. Regardless of 3D LIDAR technology..or any other technology..if SuperCruise fails to perform as advertised to me as the purchasing customer then the feature is worthless to me. Furthermore and more importantly, GM was/is fully aware that SuperCruise is a well known and ongoing item of malfunction, at least with the Hummers..and GM knowingly and continually highlights SuperCruise as a working feature. If something is free/don’t have to pay for it for a period of time..but it doesn’t work..ya well enough said!
