Dealer Service Experience

Why is it so hard to get a good service experience from the dealership? We bought our truck used from an individual, so we have no sales relationship with either GMC dealer in town. One is 29 miles away and a 45 minute drive the other is 14 miles away and about a 30 minute drive. We have been going to the closer one and haven't had a good experience yet... The service department won't call you with updates and they won't answer the phone when you are transferred to service either... It's very frustrating, but I spoke to a friend who has used the other dealer for his service work on his Sierra that he bought there and he said that they are Bad too... It seems like if you spend as much $ as these new vehicles cost and you take it for service, the least that they could do is keep you updated and be available when you call.

I've said it elsewhere but after all I went through with my battery swap and hearing all these stories, I am CONVINCED many of these dealers intentionally drag their feet and most of the lemon law and buybacks are "forced" by dealers in revolt against vehicles their service departments aren't going to get a lot of routine maintenance money from. Considering how few dealers have even bothered to get more than one or two techs certified (and many have none), it all feels on purpose. GM seems to be pretty good about getting packs out to dealers for swaps but then a dealer will take 30+ days to do something they could knock out in 6 hours. They just don't want to deal with something new...they're pushing back against the ocean because, long-term, EVs will dominate the world market and with this attitude by dealers, US brands are going to be decades behind and uncompetitive.

The thing that really stinks is that she had an appointment for Tuesday and she went to drop it off Monday evening (thinking that they would be closed on Memorial Day). When she pulled up it was close to closing time and she got attitude for showing up to drop it off... Then all day Tuesday no communication and she finally got someone on the line (service Leveling System was the issue) they told her that they were having the part shipped overnight and that it was a quick fix and would be ready on Wednesday... No communication all day and then she finally gets someone on the phone and they tell her that the part was back ordered and it won't be in until next Tuesday... And she can come pick it up and bring it back next week... It's just Frustrating...

You don't need a sales relationship. I haven't bought a vehicle local in 15 years. I get amazing service from Cadillac and GMC. Ram, not so much and I've given up after trying 3 different dealerships.

For GMC I started with a shit dealership but then found an amazing one on my 2nd try.

I called the service manager for each and asked about the TSB for the roof panels. First dealer said he never heard of it and I'd have to ge warranty approval. Idiot.

Called 2nd dealer and asked same question and he knew all about it and said bring it in. Furthermore i confirmed they guarantee a Hummer EV loaner anytime I'm in for service if available. They only have 3 so if its not urgent they can schedule for one. If urgent they'll put me in a GMC pickup until one is available.

Last time I was there they couldn't find the keys to the hummer so they gave me a GMC pick up off the lot with 12 miles on it as an extended test drive and I went back the next day for the hummer loaner.

Shop for service like you shop for sales.

@brooks our dealership has never offered any type of loaner vehicle which is why it's such a pain... But our daughter is out of school for the summer so she can run my wife over to drop off and pick up and she can drive the daughter's car if she needs to... But a loaner Hummer would be FANTASTIC... I wish we were in a market that offered that...

That sucks. If it makes you feel any better, I bought the vehicle new and sometimes it is a real struggle to get any information when it is in the shop. Luckily for me, they at least try and schedule loaner vehicles so I am not too concerned when it has been in the shop. Also, they have been Hummer loaners so that's nice as well.
