Run Flat Tires?

4495 Views 24 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  skiborsy
I don’t see a spare tire mounted under the SUT. Does anyone know if the tires are run flat tires? Has any info been published specifically addressing flats?

No run flat for a 35". You are on your own as to what you want to do about carrying a spare. I called Hummer about a spare. Short answer is no spare for the truck.

Interesting, I thought we would have a spare

You'd think they'd at least have it as an option since the SUV is going to come with a spare.

I’ve seen terrific mounts in the bed but there wouldn’t be any bed left. I will probably drop the truck and go for the SUV.

For real. It's a definite downside. My guess is Hummer will give you a fix-a-flat cannister and some kind of air compressor running off the air suspension, and then you're on your own. Because the battery is so massive and robs any tire storage under the bed, the only option was likely to put it IN the bed...and they made the decision not to.

I would be ok with a run flat wheel/tire option like the original H1 or even a rear bumper mounted option like some military Hummers eventually got. What I am not ok with is no option. The bed is too small to run a full size spare. Are you listening GMC?

Anyone know the dimensions of the frunk? It could fit there if it is big enough. Also there are tire mounts that can go into the receiver and swing out, that would be similar to the SUV setup.

Here is something you can purchase, maybe GM will offer an optional accessory. There are many others on the market.

It surely would be nice to have a real (full sized) spare... But in actuality... They aren't needed often... I have a 2005 Silverado with 225,000 miles on it and I think that I have only had the spare out once or maybe twice (and I do work in construction (framing) where the chance of picking up nails is very good) and most of those miles were for work... My current work truck I have had the spare out once.... The piece of mind though... Knowing that you could change it if you needed to would be a good thing... I wonder how the aftermarket one would affect the cameras though...

I thought about the camera also but I know from the Jeep world, there are wiring kits to relocate the camera. Probably have to DIY with the Hummer, at least initially.

As far as needing a full size spare: The ability to self recover and maintain full vehicle capability is VERY high on my list of requirements. I even get a matching wheel for my spare and rotate all five tires every 5,000 miles. I do this because I will buy five new tires when it comes time so my spare isn’t so old that it is dry rotted if I need it. I understand I may be in the minority, otherwise GMC would have already addressed this.
Hi guys. My first post. I saw the Hummer EV at Barrett Jackson and a GM representative was there answering questions. The spare tire came up and the guy tried hard to dance around the question best he could. A compartment in the bed won’t work and no room to mount underneath. There is a dual spare rack for in the bed and that is mentioned on the GMC site in the FAQ about accessories. This is a major oversight IMO. Won’t keep be from buying this truck.

Welcome to the forum @Lime Green! I guess GM is going to have to supply a tire repair kit or something instead of a spare. Do you have an order already for the pickup?

I think it’s strange to have an off road truck without a spare as standard and hope they provide a solution that isn’t just a can of fix a flat. I do have a truck reservation made last November for a 3X.

Welcome to the Forum, Good point on the spare tire, although if going back country for serious off roading can carry a spare in the bed.

Are you planning on doing a lot of off-roading with your 3X?
The last flat I got was in a gravel parking lot, from a sharp/large piece of gravel that wedged between the tread: Power Wagon with less than 15K on stock tires.

Not serious off-roading or rock crawling, but lots of trips well off the beaten path into the desert, mountains, BLM land or wherever. I think it’s a pretty big oof that they didn’t factor in a spare, yet I don’t know where they would incorporate it into the current design. If I’m hauling a trailer with toys then it’s easy to bring spares for the truck and toys. It’s a lot of the smaller trips where I may just want to have a couple dirt bikes or camping gear. Or I’m hauling a load of sod or palette of bricks. The bed is pretty small as it is and trying to find room for a 35x12 spare is a pain in the ass. ...something I haven’t had to deal with on any other truck I’ve owned in the last 25+ years. I will probably be equipping the Hummer with an air compressor and winch... I’m sure there will be some aftermarket solutions to deal with this in some way. GM may have something up their sleeve.

Flat tires are not a regular thing, but they do happen. I don’t want to be stuck somewhere outside cell service or 2 hours from the nearest tire shop without a spare. Sometimes a plug kit isn’t enough.
