GMC Hummer EV May Return To Its Roots As Future US Military Vehicle

"GM has announced that it is coming out with a Hummer battery-electric truck in 2021. It’s a full-size truck with 400 miles of range, 1,000 foot-pounds of torque [sic], a very highly-capable vehicle. That could provide a great base platform for an electric vehicle to be used in the military context," GM Defense President, David Albritton, told GM Authority. Although, Albritton made it clear that such a project wasn't currently under development.

It might not be under development currently but the potential of it is very exciting, even for our regular civilian versions.

@AllTerrain has an incredible ability to get the latest Hummer news up here ridiculously fast lol. @Oakwood has a similar knack.

I think this is an awesome idea, if for nothing more than to give the new Hummer a legitimate connection to it's military family roots. It's a great bragging right that would give it more credibility, not unlike how the old 60's and 70's racers gave their civilian counterparts legitimacy as performance coupes.

Nice to have them officially confirm the 'full-size' and 400 miles of range. I wonder if the Defense President has actually seen it or is just repeating what he's heard through the grapevine....I've seen some videos from people at EV day that have said either full-size suv or wrangler-size...

I'd imagine he's seen it, but I doubt he's gotten any confirmation that the military version is a sure thing. Though I will say this, the author at GM Authority who broke this story said that such a vehicle would "go beyond Battery Electric," and that "more info will come soon." I wonder if this means a fuel cell vehicle, a hybrid, or what?

Also, the general consensus is that the Hummer twins are definitely full-size, but on the "smaller end" of that...for the truck, think a little shorter than a GMC Sierra Crew Cab, but taller and wider.

Awesome. Glad it won't be too small! It IS a hummer

GM was working on fuel-cell plans since 2016 and produced this early concept:
105

A Hummer FCEV for the military makes sense to me for these reasons:

“But there are benefits to hydrogen that outweigh electric — sometimes literally, as hydrogen fuel cells are much lighter than powerful batteries. As you can top up a hydrogen car much quicker than charging your electric model, they’re perfect for public transport and businesses that can’t afford vehicle downtime.” ~ credit

My guess is that the first batch of GMC Hummer military vehicles are going to just be used around bases. I can't see them being used for long trips.
