General Motors will be holding the grand opening of Factory ZERO today in in Detroit-Hamtramck at 4:15 pm eastern.
Yea I’m aware of the complaints over there. I’m referring more to the marketing and publicity. In fact, these days when I mention I have a Hummer reservation I always seem to find myself in a Hummer vs Rivian debate (never Tesla, which is interesting). It seems like Rivian has simply done a better job of building and maintaining the hype. I never thought I’d be considering any alternative to the Hummer, yet here I am, mostly because GM seems to be getting lapped in terms of content. Using the configurator as an example again, I can build any model R1S or R1T on the Rivian website. I need to reference a pdf and have a calculator handy to try to replicate that for the SUT, and there is nothing released yet for the SUV unless I’m mistaken. Yet the timelines are virtually the same for production. If you think Rivian is good at communications, well go check out those forums, you will hear exactly the opposite. Apparently they already have some quality issues that may be holding up the R1T deliveries, the powered tonneau covers are disabled on the test drive vehicles and have issues with shrinking and stretching. They have also had a few suspension failures.
Agree with your take... Rivian is the new shiny thing on the block, and GM is the old guy with a cigar. Rivian will have troubles as all new manufactures do, but I would expect HummerEV quality will have issues as well.Yea I’m aware of the complaints over there. That said, I personally wouldn’t want anything to do with the first round of the first vehicle ever produced by a start up and expect the Hummer will be a better/more reliable day 1 product, even if not perfect. Lucky for me (not really), I don’t expect I would receive either the Hummer SUV or the R1S before 2023 so the kinks will hopefully be worked out by then.
I used to have reservations for both, but gave up on Rivian because of all there delays. I placed my original reservation in May of 2019. At one point I was going to get the R1S for my wife and the Hummer for me, but ended up getting her a Mach E instead. Maybe one day when Rivian gets all the production and service center sites figured out, I could still end up with one, but I would expect it to be when I can order it and get it within weeks, not years. I like the Rivian, but the Hummer removable roof, muli-pro tailgate, bigger bed and 800V charging convinced me it was the right truck for me.Yea I’m aware of the complaints over there. GM has vehicle specific accessories either available in the configurator or through their accessories website. As for the issue of the "configurator", with the current Edition 1, there is really nothing much to configure as far as colors or interior, you get what you get. I suspect GM will create a configurator once they are ready to build the EV3X versions, which will have color choices and other options. As far as accessories, I personally do not need to see those in a configurator, just give me a list and some pictures. FYI the colors in the Rivian configurator have not been shown to be very accurate. Ford had a fairly simple "configurator" for the Mach E, but it was not very color accurate either, I looked at some at dealers and also some of the color samples they had. I prefer to be able to see something in person, rather than a computer rendering.
Agree with what you’re saying but that was meant to be just one example of something Rivian is doing effectively that GM is not. As mentioned, the Rivian site allows you to configure any model (R1T or R1S) so I’d expect a GM equivalent to do more than just ED1. It would then act as somewhere you could go to combine color, options (e.g., wheel options, transparent roof, etc.), and maybe accessories. Yes, it's basically just a toy but what better option is there in the short term to actually build and see the truck you want/plan to order if you do not have an ED1 reservation? It's the first place I go to gauge my own interest in cars and I've run it for the new Jeeps, the Rivian, the Lucid Air, the Porsche Taycan and various Teslas. On the other hand, I'm not even sure I can easily find the color options for the non-ED1 models on the Hummer website.I used to have reservations for both, but gave up on Rivian because of all there delays. I have looked at that accessory page and am satisfied with what is on it. Actually many more accessory choices than what Rivian has. I agree the monitors can have an effect, but when people looked at the Rivian configurator, versus photos of real trucks once a few were out, there were surprising differences on the same monitor. Same thing has occurred for the interior, once people were able to see it in person.GM has vehicle specific accessories either available in the configurator or through their accessories website. The 200+ available accessories will be available to purchase there.
There will of course be 3rd party websites/companies as well selling new things for the Hummer in the future.
As for color accuracy, that can actually depend on your monitor and if you have a good quality IPS screen or one that has been properly calibrated with a color accurate display. However, yes you may want to see the colors in person to get the best idea of what they look like.
